OptiLight by Lumenis, explained.
Intense pulsed light has been used in dermatology for years. OptiLight is the first and only IPL device FDA-approved for dry eye, and we are the practice in this area that offers it.
What it is for
The most common form of dry eye involves the meibomian glands, small glands along the eyelid margin that produce the oily layer keeping tears from evaporating. When those glands are blocked or inflamed, the tear film breaks down early, and the eye responds with irritation and, often, watering.
OptiLight applies precise pulses of light to the skin below the eye, aimed at the inflammation driving that cycle rather than at the symptom it produces.
What a session is like
- You wear protective eye shields; a cool gel goes on the treatment area
- The handpiece delivers a series of light pulses. Most people describe a warm snap
- A session takes roughly fifteen minutes
- It is non-invasive, and you go back to your day afterwards
- A course is typically a series of sessions a few weeks apart, not a single visit
Who it may suit
It is considered for patients whose dry eye is driven by the mechanism above, and it is one option among several rather than a default. Some skin types and some medical histories are not appropriate for IPL, which is part of what an evaluation establishes.
What it is not
It is not a cure, and it is not a one-visit fix. Dry eye is usually a condition to manage rather than eliminate, and IPL is often combined with other parts of a plan. Any clinic promising permanent resolution is overstating it.
How you would find out whether it fits
A dry eye evaluation looks at your eyelids, your glands, and how your tear film behaves. Then your doctor explains which kind of dry eye you have and which treatments address it. If OptiLight is not the right tool for your case, we will say so.
