Contact lenses

Hard lenses, and why anyone chooses them.

Rigid gas permeable lenses are smaller, firmer and sharper than soft lenses. For some eyes they are simply the better answer, and for a few they are the only one.

Not the hard lenses people remember

The hard lenses of decades ago were made of a material that let no oxygen through, which is where their reputation came from. Rigid gas permeable is the replacement: the same firmness, in a material oxygen passes through.

Why firmness helps

A soft lens drapes over the cornea and takes on its shape, which means it also takes on its irregularities. A rigid lens holds its own shape. Tears fill the gap underneath, and that tear layer smooths out the surface light passes through.

For an eye whose surface is uneven, that can be the difference between vision that is corrected and vision that is genuinely sharp.

Who they tend to suit

  • Irregular corneas, where a soft lens cannot give a clean result.
  • High astigmatism, beyond what toric soft lenses handle comfortably.
  • Anyone whose soft lenses correct the prescription but still leave vision not quite crisp.
  • Long-term wearers: a single pair lasts far longer than a year of disposables.

The honest trade-off

You feel them at first. A rigid lens sits smaller than the colored part of your eye and your lids move across its edge with every blink, so the first week or two is an adjustment in a way soft lenses are not. Most people stop noticing; some decide it is not for them.

They also want consistency. Wear them most days and adaptation holds. Leave them for two weeks and the first hours back can feel like starting over.

The fitting is the whole job

An RGP lens is fitted to the shape of your cornea, not just to your prescription, so the measurement matters more than it does with a soft lens. Expect the first lens to be a starting point that gets adjusted. That is the process working, not a mistake.

There are other specialty designs for corneas that rigid lenses alone will not settle on, and your doctor will raise them if your eyes call for it.

Hard lenses are fitted at Webb Eyecare, and the Guaranteed Contact Lens Success Program applies here too. More about contact lens exams and fittings.
